  • Tax Tips & Business Planning for the Future: Making the RIGHT Decisions

Al Escobar – Modern Method Gunite

The objective of this course is to develop a framework for understanding how taxes affect business decisions. Traditional accounting courses do not consider the role of taxes. Similarly, traditional tax courses often ignore the richness of the decision context in which tax factors operate. The key themes of the framework – all parties, all taxes and all costs – are applied to decision contexts, such as investments, compensation, organizational form, regulated industries, financial instruments, tax-sheltered investments, mergers and acquisitions, multinational, and multistate. The ultimate goal is to provide a new approach to thinking about taxes that will be valuable even as laws and governments change.

The practical consequences to the study of taxation are varied. But this fact stands out--taxes affect us all. Even if one does not plan to be a tax practitioner, there is a definite relevancy in the study of taxes. Various aspects of one`s personal life are affected by tax rules. These rules can be significant in such personal transactions as: selling a residence, paying an obligation, investing in stocks or bonds, handling marital settlements, estate planning and retirement. Business transactions are also influenced by the rules of taxation. Some of these are: buying and selling business property, handling of mortgages, liquidating or reorganizing a business and transactions between an employer and employee"

The study of taxation can be divided into many areas: individuals, partnerships, limited liability corporation tax, “S” corporation tax,  “C” corporation tax, employment tax, estates, trusts, state taxes, gift taxes to name a few.

It will include information about ADA, TAS, 2011 NEC, CPSC interpretations of VGBA, electrician licensing requirements, and the MAHC and the impact in Texas and nationally. Changes to the Texas Standards for Public Pools and Spas will be introduced and discussed

Since 1999 the aquatics industry has been the target of many new national laws and standards as well as subject to fundamental changes to existing laws and rules regulating aquatic facilities and facility personnel. These changes have resulted in confusion and frustration. Often the interpretation and application of these laws, rules and guidelines appeared to go from one extreme to the other, with little explanation and no consideration of the impact upon the aquatics industry. How all these regulations, standards, guidelines, and recommendations affect the construction, operation and maintenance of a facility is confusing to aquatics professionals, maintenance professionals, administrators, and regulatory officials. To further complicate this issue often national regulations and standards can and do differ from regulations in Texas.

The different regulations and how they affect the pool owner/operator in Texas will be clarified and simplified. In addition copies of a portion of the proposed rules for public pools and spas will be provided for discussion.

  • Alternative Sanitization - Exploring other Technology

Kent Fisher – Delta UV

John Grillo – Del Ozone

Delta UV presents optional sanitizing to chlorine and salt.  Chlorine can leave skin dry and itchy, while irritating eyes and nose, when levels are too high and the same when the pH is off due to chemical imbalance.  Salt is very popular currently, but UV is non corrosive and leaves no residual in the pool.

Ozone is an efficacious antimicrobial oxidizer that can be safely applied to public swimming venues.  Its function in public recreational water is as a Secondary Disinfection System used in conjunction with chlorine. Water clarity and quality is improved in the pool after ozone’s potent and rapid oxidation (to which microorganisms cannot become immune).

Ozone is effective at reducing chloramines in pool water that when left uncontrolled, 1) will reduce the ability of the pool water to protect itself against human pathogens; 2) contribute to structural/equipment corrosion (primarily as a function of off-gas); 3) potentially exacerbate “swimmer’s asthma”.

Ozone system sizing, component details, and design parameters, in conjunction with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and the proposed Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC), are discussed for four categories of swimming venues to provide the balance of efficacy and safety for pool operators and bather/swimmers.
